Foundation of the partner group Purposes: find a way to tighten our cooperation with MPIfR on magnetic fields of galaxies • Magnetic fields in nearby galaxies • Magnetic fields in our Galaxy • using pulsar RMs • using RMs of extragalactic radio sources • using 6cm polarization survey -- the key project • Studies of pulsars and supernova remnants

  6. Foundation of the partner group Purposes: find a way to tighten our cooperation with MPIfR on magnetic fields of galaxies • 2000 Jan. 11: First idea of the partner group by R. Wielebinski • 2000 Feb.15: Application to CAS • 2000 Mar.15: Application to MPG • 2000 Nov.30: Formal approval from MPG, "the Letter of Appointment" for the group leader from the president of MPG • 2001 March 26: Approval from CAS • 2001 April 19: Official opening of the partner group R. Wielebinski visited NAOC • 2001 Dec.19: Grants from NAOC for initialization. • 2002 January: Grants from MPIfR every quarter. • 2002 January: The partner group really starts running!

Have to be patient! It takes two years to make the group running!

Activisties of partner group: Scientific Exchanges • 2001 Oct.12-Nov.10: JinLin Han visited MPIfR: for work on pulsars and magnetic fields: some obs of PSR RMs • 2002 May-July: Xizhen Zhang & Xianghua Li visited at MPIfR • 2002 July: Prof. Wielebinski/Dr. Axel Jessner/ Dr. Marita Krause visited NAOC (Beijing) • 2002 July: Prof. Ernst Fuerst / Dr. Wolfgang Reich / Dr. Patricia Reich visited Urumqi and Beijing 2003 SARS problem! • 2003 Dec.15th - 2004 Jan.15th: Prof. JinLin Han and Ms. Hui Men visited MPIfR: RM survey of strong polarized radio sources • 2004 May 27th-June 4th: Prof. Wielebinski visits NAOC: • gave lectures on "The morphology of radio pulsars" and "Observations of warm/cold gas in galaxies" (also lectures in Beijing Normal University and Peking University); • gives instructions/advises for construction of 50m & 40m radio telescope in China. • 2004 Sept.3rd: Dr. Wolfgang Reich visited NAOC: new progress of 6cm system

Activisties of partner group: Coorganized Meetings • Sino-German conference on radio astronomy: Radio Studies of Galactic Objects, Galaxies, and AGNs • 2001 Dec.: First Announcement • Hosted by the partner group + RW organized German side • 2002 July 18-25 Xi'an, China • 9 German guests and 5 distinguished guests from other countries, as well as 70 (yes!) domestic participants • all enjoyed the hot spring and hot topics • very successful meeting, deeply impressed to all participants • earned a good fame from the Chinese astronomical society • Proceedings published in 6 months! Available on web & ADS! • International Conference:The Magnetized Interstellar Medium • 2003 Sept.8 -12th Antalya, Turkey • MPIfR mainly organized + Han in SOC • J.L. Han and X.H. Sun participated

Activisties of partner group: Urumqi 6 cm system System preparations --- visits from China • 2001 May-June: Hongbo Zhang visited at MPIfR for receiver/antenna details • 2001 Oct. 26: MPG grants for receivers (front-end) approved (55,000 DM+MPIfR matches) • 2002 Oct.1st -Dec.31: Mr. Xiaohui Sun visited MPIfR (for survey software development). • 2002 Nov. 25th -- 2003 May 27th: Mr. Maozhen Chen visited MPIfR (for the construction of the 6cm system). • 2003 July 22th - Oct. 22th: Mr. Xiaohui Sun visited MPIfR (for survey software development). • 2003 Oct.1st - Dec.20th: Mr. Maozhen Chen visited MPIfR (for 6cm system assembly). • The 6cm receiver system: Mission

  12. Activities of partner group: Urumqi 6 cm system 6cm receiver system: Mission • 2004 May/June: Strong efforts to get it in site & extensive attempts for the installation H. Mattes, P. Mueller, O. Lochner visited for 3 weeks! Failed due to lack of some parts and the box-size problem. • 2004 August: Second extensive work at Urumqi • 5th -- 25th: O. Lochner, Mr. J. Klein & T. Lochner for installation. • 12th --29th: Dr. Peter Mueller for software test • 17th -- 28th: Dr. Patricia Reich for software test • 17th -- Sept.2nd: Dr. Wolfgang Reich for the test observations. • 18th/19th: First light of 6cm system: Beam pattern is great! • 30th: Tests results: system temperature ~20k, one of the best over the world!
