2007 study: 30% of US adults have abused alcohol or been alcoholics (WebMD) 11% of all alcohol consumed is from the ages 12-20. More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinking (CDC)
In 2007: there were 14,406 alcoholic liver disease deaths, and 23,199 alcohol-induced deaths, excluding accidents and homicides (CDC) Healthy Liver Cirrhosis of the Liver
24% of alcoholics never receive treatment (WebMD) Treatment is rare In 2008 there were approx. 190,000 emergency room visits by persons under age 21 for injuries related to alcohol and drugs (CDC 1).
Problems addicts’ and their families face • The ongoing debate: Disease or Choice? • Extensive research has shown that the brains of addicts are different than the brains of non-addicts (Moyer 2, 5). • Lost jobs • Cost of Treatment programs • Lost relationships • Arrests • Suicide attempts • DUIs • Possible death
Society treats it as a moral issue of choice • Seen as incompetence, inadequacy and lack of willpower • If it were cancer, diabetes, etc, it would be treated differently
make a difference recognize the problem • the user needs to have a desire to change support from family, friends, and community will help the user to get well • we need to get informed and take an active part in supporting those who are suffering around us we can help!
