Primary School • Covers year 1 to 4 • Conveys to all pupils without distinction basic knowledge and skills • Emphasis is on reading, writing and arithmetic • Elements of play are integrated into the learning process
Educational Goals • Responsible for accepting and developing every child irrespective of background and capacity • Main focus on social cooperation • Diversity in the selection of activities • Work on projects
Teaching Methods • Morning circle • Free activities • Projects days and weeks • Assessment mainly as a means of promoting and preserving the pupils‘ enjoyment of learning • Marks for all subjects only in year 4
Secondary SchoolMittelschule • Covers year 5 to 9/10 • General education through instruction that is practically orientated • Foundations for the later aquisition of vocational qualifications • Flexible framework for the promotion of individual talents and abilities
Structure • Years 5 and 6 are an orientation stage • From year 7: pupils select a subject area option such as - Technology - Social studies and domestic science - Music and the arts - Sport - Economics - Foreign languages
School-leaving Qualifications • The Hauptschulabschluss after successfully completing year 9 • The certified Hauptschulabschluss after successfully completing year 9 and passing an examination • The Realschulabschluss after successfully completing year 10 and passing an examination
Grammar SchoolGymnasium • Broad-ranging general education of the type required for - study at a university - the attainment of high-level vocational qualifications
Educational Goals • High academic demands in subjects and the development of interdisciplinary thinking • Develop pupils‘ capacities for logical and critical thinking • Enable pupils to express themselves clearly • Enhance their enjoyment of indepentent problem solving

Upper Stage • Years 11 and 12: no system of classes but of foundation and advanced-level courses • Abitur: • At the end of year 12 assessment points are obtained for performance in theses courses troughout the 2 years • 3 written plus one oral examination
Vocational Education • The Berufsschule (Vocational School) • The Berufsfachschule • The Fachschule • The Fachoberschule • Berufliches Gymnasium (Vocational Grammar School)
Vocational SchoolBerufsschule • Sandwich courses: company + vocational school • Qualifications in nearly 380 recognized crafts • Vocational school: theoretical knowledge • Company: practical training on the job • Training lasts 2 to 3.5 years depending on trade • Certificate enables them to work for a particular occupation
The Berufsfachschule • Higher-level vocational school • Full-time school providing both specialised and general education • No vocational qualification is required • Qualifications that can be obtained: technical assistant for IT, for environmental protection, for domestic science, nurse, bilingual secretary, laboratoy assistant for medical technology
The Fachschule • Provides in-depth vocational education • Vocational qualification is needed • Qualifies students to work in occupations whose requirements are higher than those of a skilled blue or white-collar worker • Subjects are e.g. business administration or chemical engineering
The Fachoberschule • Provides general education as well as specialised theoretical and practical training • Two-year courses: pupils enter immediately after obtaining the Realschulabschluss • One-year courses: pupils enter after obtaining a vocational qualification • Success in final examinations leads to the Fachhochschulreife (entry to higher education)
The Vocational Grammar SchoolBerufliches Gymnasium • Take pupils with a Realschulabschluss to the Abitur in three years (years 11 to 13) • This qualification is the prerequisite for study at a university and institutions of higher education • Subject area options are: • Economics/business studies; technology/ engineering, nutrition, agriculture
The Alternative Educational Route • For adults in employment to attain school-leaving qualifications • Evening Secondary School and Evening Grammar School • Courses last one to three years depending on the qualification • Kolleg: adults can obtain the Abitur through full-time study
