  1. Atomic Structure Visit www.worldofteaching.com For 100’s of free powerpoints

  2. Name: Proton. Mass: 1 Charge: +1 Name: Neutron. Mass: 1 Charge: 0 Name: Electron. Mass: 1/2000 Charge: -1 All atoms are made up of just 3 basic sub-atomic particles:-

  3. Mass Number H 1 1 Atomic Number The Simplest Atom Name: Hydrogen Atomic Symbol: H Mass Number (Number of Protons + Neutrons) = 1 Atomic Number (Number of Protons) = 1

  4. He 4 2 The Next Simplest Atom Name: Helium Atomic Symbol: He The centre of an atom is called the NUCLEUS A Helium atom has two protons and two neutrons in its nucleus

  5. Li 7 3 The Next Simplest Atom Name: Lithium Atomic Symbol: Li The orbit nearest the nucleus can only contain 2 electrons so the third electron must be in a new orbit. Electron Configuration: 2,1

  6. Be 9 4 This orbit has room for 8 electrons The Next Simplest Atom Name: Beryllium Atomic Symbol: Be Electron Configuration: 2,2

  7. B 11 5 5p 6n The Next Simplest Atom Name: Boron Atomic Symbol: B Electron Configuration: 2,3

  8. For the next 13 elements (Carbon to Argon) draw their atomic structure and give details as for Boron. See the Periodic Table on p113 of your school planner or the inside back cover of your Revision Guide.
