Bowlby’s 44 Thieves • He diagnosed some children who had been separated from their mothers with the condition of affectionless psychopathy which involved a lack of guilt • This led Bowlby to consider the link between early separation and emotional problems
Bowlby’s 44 Thieves • Bowlby compared the juvenile thieves to a control group who had not committed any crimes • He found that 32% of thieves were affectionless psychopaths lacking a social conscience • 0% of the control group were diagnosed as an affectionless psychopath
Bowlby’s 44 Thieves • Of the 32% of thieves diagnosed, 86% had experienced early separation before the age of 5 • These findings suggest that maternal deprivation can have very severe effects including producing a lack of emotional development • These negative effects may still be present years later
Evaluation • Bowlby’s research has highlighted the importance of the relationship between the mother and child • However, it does not consider that children’s emotional problems may be due to other factors such as the poor quality of the institution itself rather than maternal deprivation • Further to this, it has been found that these negative effects which were thought to be irreversible are actually more reversible than first thought
