Almonds Have a Neutral Effect on Serum Lipid Profiles: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials Objective To evaluate the impact of almonds on lipid parameters to help define their role as a lipid modulator. JOURNAL OF THEAMERICAN DIETETICASSOCIATION Phung O, et al.J Am Diet Assoc. 2009; 109 (May).
Almonds Have a Neutral Effect on Serum Lipid Profiles: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials Trial Design A systematic review and meta-analysis of double-blind, placebo-controlled trials (5 trials; n=142) were conducted evaluating almond consumption on lipid parameters JOURNAL OF THEAMERICAN DIETETICASSOCIATION Phung O, et al.J Am Diet Assoc. 2009; 109 (May).
Almonds Have a Neutral Effect on Serum Lipid Profiles: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials Results • Almond consumption significantly lowered total cholesterol. • No statistically significant effects on LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, or the LDL:HDL ratio. • No statistical heterogeneity was observed in any of the lipid parameter analyses (I2=0% for all). • Review of funnel plots and the Egger’s weighted regression statistic p-values suggested a low likelihood of publication bias in all analyses (p>0.25 for all). JOURNAL OF THEAMERICAN DIETETICASSOCIATION Phung O, et al.J Am Diet Assoc. 2009; 109 (May).

Almonds Have a Neutral Effect on Serum Lipid Profiles: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials Conclusions • Almond consumption can reduce total cholesterol concentrations. • Almonds do not significantly impact LDL or HDL cholesterol, triglycerides or the LDL:HDL ratio. • The current body of randomized trials does not support the ingestion of almonds solely for their lipid modifying effects. JOURNAL OF THEAMERICAN DIETETICASSOCIATION Phung O, et al.J Am Diet Assoc. 2009; 109 (May).
