Layer Manager • Status This column has a green check to indicate the current layer (all new objects will be drawn on that layer). Double click here to make the layer current. • Name Give the layer a good, descriptive name (but not too long) • On Turns the visibility of that layer on (visible) or off (invisible) • Freeze Similar to 'On', but can be used in Viewports (later tutorial) • Lock Retain visibility, but disable modifying objects on the locked layer. • Color Used to select the color for objects drawn on each layer
Layer Manager Cont. • Linetype Used to select the linetype for objects drawn on each layer • Lineweight Used to select the lineweight for objects drawn on each layer • Plot Style Plot styles are used to define how objects are plotted - this can be different from the properties described above. • Plot Set the layer to either plot (on) or not (off) • New VP Freeze When on, it will freeze the selected layer in new viewports when they (viewports) are created • Description Use this to give a description to your layer system - very important when working with other users.
Standard Layer Naming-AIA Format • There are a couple of standards for how to properly name layers in AutoCAD. • We will talk about AIA Format, but you can search for the others, or ask your employer which standard they prefer. • AIA Format uses a letter to designate the type of drafting: A=Architectural E=Electrical M=Mechanical etc. • This letter will start all layers regarding those sections of the drawing. • See Handout in Resources on Moodle for more details.
Layer Filters • When doing large or complex projects, you may have over 100 layers. • Using Layer filters allows you to narrow the selection to ones specific to current work. • For example, when drawing a building, you may want to show all Electrical layers, or all layers for Walls, or some other group of layers.
Filter Creation • Layer filters are created in the Layer Manager Dialog box. • The icon in the upper right corner allows you to select New Properties Filter. Filter manager will pop up and you will be able to enter your sorting terms. • These may be part of the name, or you may sort by properties such as color, linetype, frozen/unfrozen etc.
Filter Layers Conclusion • Filter layers give the ability to show specific portions of your drawing to specific people quickly. • For example, if you have a house blueprint, you can send a copy to the plumber with only the layers that effect him, and the same for the electrician, framer, flooring, etc. • This is a timesaver, and makes sorting simple.
