Definitions Revolutionary War Confederation The Confederation Era is a time period when the colonies were no longer colonies and officially became the United States of America. This era began in 1776 when the Continental Congress planned the Articles of Confederation, which would be America’s first national government. This new government had a lot to learn. Their main goal was to prevent governmental tyranny from reappearing in the states. The Confederation Congress initially ran the government and they had the power to wage war, make peace, sign treaties, run Indian affairs, and issue money. • The war was fought between the rebels (colonists) and the British. The colonists declared the war against the British because their individual rights were being stripped away and they wanted freedom. It took place in North America from 1775 – 1783. The first shots were fired at Lexington and Concord in 1775. It ended with the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown on October 19, 1781. However, the war did not officially end until both sides agreed to the Treaty of 1783.
