  4. What is it? • Ligo is most important festival celebrated in Latvia. • It is festival celebrating summer solstice: longest day of the year. • Traditional rituals have been passed from pre-Christian times. • Associated with nature and hopes of good harvest.

  5. When and Where? • Ligo is celebrated on June 23 and 24 of each year. • These days are officially national holidays in Latvia. • Festival is celebrated also in Latvian communities abroad: USA, Australia, England • Commonly Ligo festival is celebrated at a countryside-outside!

  7. How it is celebrated? • Celebrations start at evening • Gather large crowd of people-family and friends, many wear national dress. • Sing, dance and play games around the bonfire. • Younger people jump over the bonfire and • look for bloom of fern.
