We reduced the total number of classroom Standard/Practical Discipline Referrals by 16% Using AYP measurable objectives and county guidelines to evaluate individual tests, WAHS SPED students went from passing 5/11 in 2007 to passing 10/11 in 2008.

22. CORE PLUS Core Plus is a full credit class designed to help support student achievement in the core areas. Small class size allows individual attention in the areas of reading, vocabulary, spelling, writing skills, foundational math skills. And resource skills.
23. WRITING AND MATH WORKSHOPS Special Education Teachers are assigned periods of reading or math workshop. Those teachers reach out to students who are behind in both writing and math skills. The teacher develops an individual plan for the success of the student and files a monthly report on student progress.
24. LAUNCH (Language Arts United with Numbers Combined with History) LAUNCH is a program for rising 9th graders who have not passed either their math or reading 8th grade SOL.

Reduced program fragmentation Reduced stigma Better adult support Both IDEA and NCLB make it imperative that students with disabilities, no matter what their current level of functioning, access the general curriculum to the maximum extent possible. Many professionals are concluding that the primary means of ensuring access is the collaborative model.
32. When instruction is offered in a separate setting, it is often difficult if not impossible for a special educator to cover the content area in a way that adequately prepares the student. Even if special educators are approved as being highly qualified, the intent of the law to ensure that content is adequately addressed may not be met.

34. • The general education teacher is the expert in content, management, pacing, and what the typical student looks like. • The special educator’s content is the process of learning. In addition, they are experts in strategies, differentiation, accommodation, remediation, and the availability of services to level the playing field

Collaborative Calendar By October 28 Each collaborative team will schedule at least one meeting with Dr. Domecq to review collaborative progress and discuss plans for further differentiation in the collaborative classroom. Each member will complete one 45 min observation. October 30 First Quarter Journal is Due By November 30 Observations of selected collaborative teams and meet with small groups to assess progress and address concerns. By January 15 Each member will complete one 45 minute observation January 20 Second Quarter Journal is Due April 1 Each member will complete one 45 minute observation. March 15 Third Quarter Journal is Due April 21 “Where We Have Been and Where We Are Going” 4 – 5 pm also presentation of the 2010 – 2011 Collaborative Consensus Document

51. There is NO EXCUSE for not having BOTH teachers’ names on both the report card and on the schedule. Make a policy statement that for NCLB purposes, the teacher listed first is the teacher of record. If they say there is only one space, then hyphenate the name.
52. Give collaborative classes a separate number if you have to do so. There is NO EXCUSE for a special educator not to be able to access the same records as a general education teacher.
53. There is NO EXCUSE not to get a substitute for a collaborative teacher. If you don’t get a sub, you are sending a message.
54. There is NO EXCUSE not to find a way to provide some type of common planning for collaborative teams.
