Learn about the process of cell division in eukaryotes, specifically mitosis and cytokinesis. Discover how cells divide to create identical offspring cells and how this process occurs in both single-celled and multicellular organisms. Explore the stages of mitosis, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis. Understand the differences between cytokinesis in animal cells (cleavage furrow) and plant cells (cell plate formation). Watch informative videos to further understand the concepts.

8-2 Cell Division All cells are derived from the division of preexisting cells. Binary fission is the division of a prokaryotic cell into two offspring cells. binary fission
Cell Division in Eukaryotes Mitosis: results in new cells that are identical to the original cell. Occurs in single cellular as well as in tissues and organs in multicellular organisms. Meiosis: Reduces the chromosome number by half in new cells. New cells join together later to produce cells with a complete set of chromosomes. http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/animation__mitosis_and_cytokinesis.html
The Cell Cycle A repeating set of events that make up the life of a cell. The time between cell division is interphase.
Interphase Most of a cell’s life is spent in interphase. G1 = growth to maturity S = DNA is copied G2 = cell prepares for cell division; more growth G0 = *Cells may enter this phase where DNA is not copied and cells will not divide. Ex.: cells in the central nervous system stop dividing at maturity.
Mitosis – Division of the Nucleus Using your text, pg. 150, and the mitosis image on the preceding slide, identify the events of mitosis: Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
Cytokinesis Animal cells: cell membrane pinches inward -called a cleavage furrow. Plant cells: vesicles formed by the Golgi apparatus fuse at the midline of a dividing cell, forming a cell plate. mitosis
Section 8-2 Review Describe the events of binary fission. During which phase of the cell cycle are chromosomes copied? Which phase of the cell cycle could you identify most readily with a light microscope? Explain. Describe the structure and function of the mitotic spindle. Explain the main differences between cytokinesis in animal cells and cytokinesis in plant cells.
