Project Purposes • Bosse High School has identified reading/reading comprehension as a school-wide weakness • 52.5% of freshmen in 2009-2010 school year were at least 3 grade levels below in reading according to NWEA scores. Bosse teachers want a reading class to try to improve students reading skills.

  3. Objectives • The ultimate goal would be to get students back to grade level within the year. • We believe developing better reading skills will help students be more successful in high school and beyond.

  4. Project Design • Students identified through middle school English teachers using Acuity/ISTEP. • Class will meet daily for 50 minutes all year. • Pearson AMP Reading program • Neuroimpress Method • pre-reading strategies • graphic organizers • after reading strategies, questioning • Will compare 2009-2010 data to 2010-2011 data (NWEA, ECA)

  5. Desired Outcomes • Students will improve reading skills. • Students will perform better on ECA. • Students will enjoy reading more. • Students will be more successful in high school classes.

  6. Evidence/Data • NWEA scores fall, winter, spring • ECA scores (sophomore year) • Grades • Attitudes toward reading (pre-post class) Control group will be 2009-2010 freshmen (all, special education)

  7. Knowledge Gained • Bosse teachers have agreed to document and share the experience and findings. • If Bosse is successful in raising student reading levels and reading skills, other schools may try a similar approach.
