Why College? • Expected lifetime earnings: • Non-high school graduate $1 million • High school graduate $1.2 million • Some college $1.5 million • Bachelor's degree $2.1 million • Master's degree $2.5 million • Doctoral degree $3.4 million • Professional degree $4.4 million • Source: U.S. Census Bureau
College Options • Technical/Vocational college • 2-year college • 4-year university
Deciding on a College Characteristics to consider: • Location • Size of campus & student body • Degree programs offered • Extracurricular activities • Cost & Financial Aid • Admission Policy • Accreditation • Support Services • Personality of the campus
Narrowing Down Colleges • Research and investigate schools. • Narrow your list down to 3 schools (if possible).
Road Trip Plan time to visit the colleges you are considering! *meet with an admissions counselor -chances of admission -review cost/financial aid -graduation -job placement *take a campus tour *visit a class *talk with staff and students
Apply Early! • All colleges have different deadlines for applying. • Know your deadlines! • Advantages to applying early: • More scholarship opportunities • Better chance of being admitted • Potentially knowing admission status earlier
Application Process A typical application packet requires: • Application • Transcript • Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) • Letter of Recommendation (s) • Personal Statement
Decisions, Decisions • Compare offers. • Talk with parents, teachers, and a counselor. • Choose the college that’s right for you. • Contact colleges you choose not to attend.

How much does college cost? • 2 yr degree (live at home) $3000-$5000 • BA (public university) $48,000-$60,000 • BA (private university) $80,000-$140,000 • Law School? Add $30,000-$50,000 • Medical School? Add $100,000-$140,000 Source: ACT organization

Apply for Financial Aid early! FAFSA forms can be submitted after January 1st. www.fafsa.ed.gov *Before the FAFSA can be submitted, students and parents need to apply for a PIN. www.pin.ed.gov

Beware of . . . Financial aid scams *You should never have to pay a fee to submit the FAFSA or any scholarship application.
CHS Scholarship Role • Collect scholarship information. • Publish scholarship opportunities. • Liaison between providers and students. • Review packets before submission. • We do not fill out applications. • We do not insure your child can afford college.
