OVERVIEW • iPhone OS 1.0 released with original iPhone on June 29, 2007 • Very bare-bones, limited functionality • iPhone OS 2.0 released with iPhone 3G on July 11, 2008 • Introduced App Store, location services, push email, etc. • iPhone OS 3.0 scheduled for June, 2009 • Lots of very exciting things to look forward to…

  5. REASONS • Address minor issues (bugs) and incrementally improve existing features • Address shortcomings and competitive criticisms • Introduce radical new features to raise the stakes for competitors

  6. FEATURES • Apple Push Notification Service (APN) • Cut / copy / paste support • In-app purchase support • Accessory support

  7. ADDITIONAL FEATURES • Improvements to Mobile Safari for web-based applications • Additional access to existing features • Incremental improvements

  8. APPLE PUSH NOTIFICATION • Intended to address lack of background support • Delayed to allow infrastructure to be developed • Managed and tightly controlled by Apple

  9. CUT / COPY / PASTE SUPPORT • Intended to work with all media, across applications • Unified API and standard controls • Supports custom data types for inter-application exchange

  10. IN-APP PURCHASE SUPPORT • Intended to more fully develop the App Store marketplace • Allows add-ons, upgrades, “trial versions”, etc. • Integrated with iTunes store for billing • Apple takes their standard cut

  11. ACCESSORY SUPPORT • Intended to open up third-party development of accessories • Keyboards, cameras, etc. • Supports 30-pin connector and Bluetooth • Tightly regulated by Apple • approval required

  12. OTHER IMPROVEMENTS • Mobile Safari adds audio and video support for richer web-based applications • Access now allowed to iPod collection, direct embedding for email and maps • Incremental improvements (codecs, streaming support, additional APIs) for existing features
