  22. WiFi at Drexel • The DragonFly wireless network equipment at Drexel supports all current WiFi standards: 802.11a, 11b, 11g, and 11n. • Drexel recommends wireless devices that support “dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz) 802.11n” to provide the best performance.  Drexel University Technology Vendor Expo 2010

  23. Smartphones and Email • Smartphones give mobile access to the Internet, email, contacts, calendars, etc. • Most phones (Windows, iPhone, Android, WebOS) connect to Drexel’s servers directly • iPhone data/text plans cost more than the others • BlackBerries have a special way to connect • That “BES” method requires extra monthly charges from both the wireless carrier and Drexel Drexel University Technology Vendor Expo 2010

  24. Mobile Email Pre-Requisites • BlackBerry users • Tell carrier that you’ll use “BES” ($5/mo extra) • Tell Telecom (phone-request@drexel.edu or x5862) to setup BES ($10/mo to office phone) • Other users • Tell carrier that you want Internet access; don’t mention email or Exchange • Configuration assistance contact IRT Help Desk Drexel University Technology Vendor Expo 2010

  25. Data Plans for use in the U.S. • Carrier require data plans for smartphones • “Unlimited” for data plans usually means • Up to 5GB/month or you pay more • Only within the U.S. or you pay $20/MB • Cannot be used as a modem for your laptop • “Tethering” add-ons plans cost extra • iPhone and BlackBerry plans cost more Drexel University Technology Vendor Expo 2010

  26. Smartphones outside the U.S. • Look for GSM/HSPA devices with the frequencies that you need: • International data services are not part of any standard plan • If you need a passport to travel, add an “international unlimited data plan” before you go; cancel it after you return and get your first bill; don’t cancel before that first bill comes • Personally-liable accounts often can’t add and cancel monthly, but Drexel-liable accounts can, although you may need to push • These plans are expensive ($30-$60/mo more) Drexel University Technology Vendor Expo 2010

  27. Wide-Area Wireless Networks for your Computer (WWAN) • The same networks that support phones, support data cards for computers • Verizon and Sprint have national 3G using EV-DO Rev. A technology; AT&T and T-Mobile have 3G using HSPA technology, but have smaller coverage areas than Verizon and Sprint (T-Mobile significantly so) • Sprint and Clearwire offer a 4G network using WiMAX, but it’s only available in and near big cities • Because of different technologies and radio frequencies, no carrier’s equipment will work on another’s network Drexel University Technology Vendor Expo 2010

  28. Wide-Area Wireless Networks Outside the U.S. • EV-DO is not used outside the U.S. so “regular” Verizon and Sprint data cards won’t work; the HSPA frequencies used by AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S. won’t work overseas unless they support 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA (3G). • Some laptops can be ordered with a DORA/HSPA combo card to work on the Verizon or Sprint DORA network in the U.S. and partner firms’ HSPA network overseas.  If you get such a card, you must activate the international feature with your carrier before you leave the U.S. • International data services are not part of any standard AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon contract; ask about an upgrade for international data. Drexel University Technology Vendor Expo 2010
