Mugs with Personality You will combine the slab, coil, and pinch (and wheel for some) methods to create an unique mug with an awesome personality. Your mug will be fully functional that will speak about the type of person you are.
Ask yourself a few questions • What do you do in your spare time? • Sports? Hobbies? • What character traits do you possess? • Considerate? Crazy? Social Butterfly? Athletic? • What makes you smile? • What makes you happy? • What kind of person are you? • Are you who you want to be?
On a sheet of paper • Develop 3 sketches for mugs with some added details that express something about you. You will be creating a pair of mugs, so each set of sketches should show both mugs. Show front and back of each set. • Planning is essential • I MUST CHECK YOUR SKETCHES BEFORE YOU BEGIN!!! • (3 sketches front and back of 2 mugs = 12 total)
To Create the mugs • CREATE ONE MUG AT A TIME TO ENSURE QUALITY!!! • Use slab, coil, wheel method to create the cylinder for your mug. • Both mugs should be similar in height and shape. • Allow the cylinders to dry leather hard. • Hand build details for the outside of your mugs. • These details will be expressing characteristics of you. • Make handles for the mugs. • I will demo. • BESURE TO SCORE, SLIP, AND SMOOTH EACH SEAM. NO AIR BUBBLES. • No seams should be visible when the mugs are complete.
Requirements • A pair of correctly crafted mugs. • Similar in shape and size. • The use of coil, slab, wheel, or pinch methods somewhere in your mug. • Know where they are and be able to tell me when you turn your project in. • Additional hand building on the surface of each mug, representational of the artist’s characteristics. • A correctly pulled handle attached to each mug. • Similar in shape and size. • Project turned in on time, with no rough edges, name carved on bottom.
Pulling a Handle • Step 1: Form a ball of clay • Step 2: Make a wedge Shape
Pulling a Handle cont… • Step 3: Lift up Wedge Shape from the thickest area. • Step 4: Dip end in water. • IT IS IMPORTANTY TO KEEP THE CLAY AND THE HAND YOU ARE PULLING WITH WET THROUGH THIS ENTIRE PROCESS. • Step 5: Pull downward squeezing the clay slightly.
Pulling a Handle cont… • Step 6: Turn the clay ¼ turn after each pull to keep the handle even • Step 7: Once you get the length you want, turn clay ½ turn after each pull to thin the handle.
Pulling a Handle cont… • Step 8: Shape the handle by folding the thin end back to the thick end. • Step 9: Set the handle aside and allow it to dry leather hard. • Step 10: Cut the handle when it is leather hard. • Step 11: Score and slip handle to mug. No seams
