  2. Watergate Cover-Up • January 1973 – Trial for Watergate begins • All burglars but one change their plea to “guilty” • Judge John Sirica voices that he is positive these individuals did not act alone • McCord (the one) hints that Nixon administration helped them

  3. Nixon’s Response • Dismisses Dean • Haldeman and Ehrlichman resign • Goes on TV and denies the cover up of Watergate • Public interest grows

  4. Senate Reaction • Begins their own investigation • Led by Senator Sam Ervin (NC) • Called all of the “President’s Men” in to testify • America was glued

  5. Testimony • John Dean • “What did the president know and when did he know it?” • Said the president was “deeply involved” • President refutes this

  6. Alexander Butterfield • Revealed that Nixon had taped all of his presidential conversations • “To help write his memoirs” • The Senate needed these tapes…

  7. The Saturday Night Massacre • A year-long battle persisted to obtain the “Nixon tapes” • Mass firing spree and resigning of Nixon aides ensued

  8. Spiro Agnew • Vice President • Abruptly resigns • Accepted bribes from Maryland engineering firms before and during his term as vice-president • Gerald Ford – new VP

  9. Nixon • Paid only $1,000 in taxes on a $200,000 income in ‘71 and ‘72 • “People have the right to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I am not a crook” • Nixon

  12. Impeachment • House Judiciary Committee determines there was enough evidence to impeach • Charges • Obstruction of justice • Abuse of power • Contempt of Congress (refusing to release tapes)

  13. Tapes • Mysteriously 18 minutes were missing… • Evidence is revealed

  14. Resignation • August 8, 1974, Nixon officially resigns • Gerald Ford sworn in
