The A-Team Update March 2013 Welcome Aboard! As mentioned in our last newsletter, the A-Team search committee went right to work trying to find a new Student Affairs Research, Assessment and Staff Development Coordinator to fill the vacancy left by Ayeesha when she left for North Carolina to pursue her doctorate. After vetting many qualified candidates, the committee recommendedWhitney Brown for the position. Dr. Schultz extended the offer to Ms. Brown who will be starting with us June 10th.Ms. Brown comes to us from the University at Albany where she currently serves on the leadership team of the Division’s Assessment Council as the liaison between the Chairs of the Council’s three Working Groups and the Assistant VP for Student Success. She comes with a wealth of knowledge in the areas of Student Learning Outcomes, Data Collection & Analysis, and Campus Labs tools. She is finishing her MPA this semester and says she’s excited for a new adventure in Alaska. Anyone who attended her open forum presentation probably walked away feeling as excited about Student Learning Outcomes as the A-Team. Book Club The first book group meeting was held on February 15th and gave rise to a lot of good conversation underscoring thecritical importance of doing evidence-based assessment. DebMole was kind enough to take great notes. Here are just a fewof the highlights Deb captured:- The Best Practice Self Reflection section really made you stop and ask, “Is my work helping students?” and “Am I really doing my best work?”- Establishing and using a standardized vocabulary is essential.- Not just the leaders need to be involved in developing Learning Outcomes. Student employees also need to be trained on how to write good SLOs.The next book club meeting will be this Friday (March 1st) from noon to 1pm in the Lyla Richards conference room. It’s a very informal group so feel free to bring a sack lunch and join in on the discussion. We’ll be reviewing chapters 3 and 4 but even if you haven’t read them, the A-Team is certain you’ll benefit from what is shared by others. SLO Workshops The A-Team is working to finalize Student Learning Outcome workshops. Dr. Schultz has asked that SLOs be written no later than May/June and include at least what the outcome is and how it can be measured. The final dates, locations and times will be set within the next week or so. Keep an eye out for our new Workshop Website to sign up for a session that’s just right for you. We’ll send you a link to it when it’s up and ready. Please feel free to contact Theresa, Mike, Dawn, Andre, Karen or Deb any time at a-team@uaa.alaska.edu
