Basic Magnet Stuff • Magnets are objects that produce a magnetic field. • Magnetic fields interact with certain materials (usually certain metals) and can stick to them • Magnets have two poles: North and south • Unlike electric charges, however, you cannot separate the north and south poles of a magnet from one another. • If you break a magnet in half, you get two new magnets, each with a north and south pole
Magnets • Magnets behave similarly to electric charges. • Like poles of the magnets repel • Unlike poles attract http://www.physics.sjsu.edu/becker/physics51/images/28_01_Bar_magnets.JPG
Magnetic Field Lines • Magnets produce field lines similar to electric field lines • Lines originate on north pole and terminate on south pole http://physicslearning.colorado.edu/PiraHome/ResourceCD/ResourceImages/PhysicsDrawings/Magnetic_Field_Lines.gif
