Naming Acids and Bases Chapter 9
Acids… • Contain one or more H+ when dissolved in water • Anion combined with as many H+ as needed to make the molecule neutral • Two types of acids 1. Binary: H + non-metal (HCl) 2. Oxyacid: H + polyatomic ion (H2SO4)
Binary Acids • Form when certain gaseous compounds dissolve in water • Naming depends on state of acid • HCl(g) hydrogen chloride • If it is dissolved in water (aq) hydro-(nonmetal root)-icacid HI(aq) HCl(aq) H2Se(aq)
Oxyacids • Naming does NOT depend on the state • Name the polyatomic ion • Replace –ate with –ic or… • Replace –itewith -ous • Change non-metal root for pronunciation • Add “acid” HBrO4 HIO2 (perbromate) (iodite)
Bases • Ionic compounds that produce OH- when dissolved in water • Follow same rules for naming ionic compounds • NaOH • Ca(OH)2 • Fe(OH)3
