Brief Intro to Mendeley A powerful, free reference manager and scientific networking tool ORGANIZE, SHARE, DISCOVER
What does Mendeley do? • Imports references from your computer, flash drive or the internet • Extracts citation info from added pdfs (really well but not perfectly!) • Keeps all your references organized in one place; backs them up, let’s you make notes on them • Generates citations and bibliographies when you are writing a paper • Enables 2-15 colleagues with similar interests to share & read one another’s references (private groups) • Enables you to network/join groups of people from all over the world who share common interests; share citations and abstracts (public groups)
Two points of access that communicate with each other • Mendeley desktop • Application: download to your computer • Main place for managing and organizing your library • Download it to every computer you own; your references will automatically sync between them (internet needed for sync) • Mendeley dashboard • Mendeley.com • Internet-based access to your library; access your library from any computer connected to the internet • Find new references in it’s extensive, searchable database • Add new citations with one click; some free pdfs but most just abstracts
Adding papers to your Mendeley desktop library • Add files or folders • Free space is limited so don’t add references that you’ve scanned on a flatbed scanner
Mendeley groups Private 1-15 people Public unlimited Need to be connected to the internet to create a group
CCRP Groups? • Private • Finger millet, Legumes, etc • Public • AEI • Social Innovation • Participatory research • Plant breeding • Pest & disease management • MET • Mendeley has the potential to be a powerful scientific networking resource for the CCRP. • Challenge: start a group with colleagues at this workshop who share common interests and start sharing references and ideas today!
