Factors that affect a toddler’s sleep • Health of a child- have a bad cold, cough; etc. (harder to sleep) • Family lifestyles and crises-lost a loved one, mom is on a business trip, go on vacation, move….. • Age of child-sleeping habits often change around a child’s second birthday. Require less sleep. (10-14 hrs.)
It’s Bedtime! Routine-Established routines- predictable nightly routine • brush teeth • read a story, • sing a song, • choose a soft toy
Nightmares • Creativity of toddler, may cause nightmares • Night terrors-occurs during first few hrs. of deep sleep. They may sit up with eyes wide open and scream, can not explain what is wrong and remember nothing in the morning. • Nightmares-frightening dreams that often seem real. (respond immediately with words of comfort)
Issues from sleep • Lack of sleep-mood swings, lack of attention and misbehavior • Struggles stem from the toddler’s need for autonomy (independence)
Washing and bathing • Should bath daily • Practice safety by using no-slip stickers or rubber mat on the bottom of the tub • Parent bathes 1-yr-old, helps a 2-yr-old, supervises a 3-yr-old • Can drown in as little as 1” of water • NEVER leave child alone • Toddlers put items in their mouth • Do not bath toddler with a sponge • They enjoy splashing and emptying water
Dressing a toddler • Encourage self-dressing-elastic, Velcro & knees reinforced • Safety, comfort, allow for growth • Quality and ease of care –synthetic fibers (polyester and acrylic) • Flame-resistant for sleepwear- can catch on fire but burns slower than other fabrics • Hand-me-downs

Toilet training- Potty time • Bowel control (sphincter muscles) is usually mastered before bladder control • Consistency is necessary between caregiver during the day and at home • Language skills are necessary for toileting success • Appropriate time is chosen to begin the toileting process • Emotional readiness-shows interest
You will need; • A doll that drinks and wets (preferably anatomically correct) • Training Pants for the doll • Training Pants for your child • Party material • Step 1: Teach the doll how to use the potty. • Step 2: Make a party for your doll • Step 3: Get rid of the diapers • Step 4: Give your child a lot to drink • Step 5: Trips to the potty
