  4. Math Progression • In mathematics, the skills required to be successful are more sequential and developmental than in other courses. Therefore, prerequisites are set for placement in middle school math classes based on a student’s success on standardized tests and class performance.

Foreign Language Electives Spanish, French, German, Latin LCPS offers six years of Foreign Languages It is recommended that a student earn at least a “B” in order to progress to the next level of foreign language study. ** Foreign languages are high school level classes that will show up on your child’s transcript for colleges to see**

Foreign Language Important Notes: • (1) For an Advanced Studies Diploma, students must successfully complete three years of one language or two years each of two different languages. • (2) Some colleges may require more than the minimum number of foreign language credits currently needed for the Advanced Studies Diploma. • (3) Colleges are looking for students to continue foreign language through their senior year of high school.

Classes for theAdvanced Studies Diploma • 4 years of English, Math, Science and Social Studies • 3 years Foreign Language OR 2 years of 1 Language and 2 years of another (minimum requirement) • 2 years of Health and PE • 1 year of Economics and Personal Finance • 1 elective in Fine, Career and Technical Arts • 3 Electives • Total= 26 Credits

  9. Classes for theStandard Studies Diploma • 4 years of English • 3 years Math, Science and Social Studies • 2 years of Health and PE • 1 year of Economics and Personal Finance • 2 electives in World Language, Fine Arts, or Career and Technical Arts • 4 Electives • Total= 22 Credits

  11. A Student in an Honors Class… • exhibits excitement/enthusiasm about the subject • likes to be challenged • demonstrates self-motivation • goes beyond expectations • completes assignments on time • has an advanced vocabulary and/or knowledge base in the areas of interest

  12. What Should I Take? In order to select courses that reflect the goal of a balanced academic and extracurricular work load, students and parents should consider the following: • What grades were earned in the subject over the past few years? • How much of a time commitment will each course require? • What are the recommendations of my parents, teachers, and counselors who know me? • Am I involved in numerous outside activities that will limit the amount of time I have for school work? • Do I like the subject?

Academy of Science • Students are eligible to apply for AOS if they are in Algebra I their 8th grade year. • AOS is at Dominion HS • Students will take upper level math and science courses at AOS and will attend BRHS for all other classes. • Applications, parent meetings, student meetings, etc. take place in the fall. • Please visit the AOS website for more detailed information.

  14. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology • All students who will be in Algebra I for their 8th grade year can apply. • This is a FULL time commitment. Students will ONLY attend TJ for all subjects, sports, etc. • Loudoun County will provide transportation (1 hour bus ride) to and from TJ from a designated location in Loudoun. • ** Please be advised that LCPS may not be funding TJ for next year and this will be decided during the budget process.

  15. Timeline • Course Selection forms need to be signed by a parent and returned to the counselor. Rising 8th Grade Course Sheets Going Home March 4th.
