This report provides an overview of the current state of land-atmosphere research in Southern Africa, highlighting the challenges faced and the opportunities for collaboration. It explores the externally-funded projects, regional networks, and recent workshops in the region. The report also emphasizes the need to expand engagement in existing initiatives and plan for future training activities.

iLEAPS(Southern) Africa Sally Archibald Report to SSC, Wits Rural Facility, November 2018
Context • Land-Atmosphere research is very dispersed in the region • Often driven by outside funders/researchers • Skilled people thin on the ground • South Africa dominates in terms of resources (human and financial) • Some regional networks which can be leveraged to support iLEAPS activities throughout the region. • Miombo Network • SAFNet Southern African Fire Network • SASSCAL Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management
Externally-funded projects in southern Africa • ARS-Africa (EMS-Africa) The ARS AfricaE project investigates the coupled carbon and water cycles of natural and disturbed savanna ecosystems in Southern Africa. It aims to deepen the knowledge on ecosystem functions of rural communities in Southern Africa.
Externally-funded projects in southern Africa • Global Fire Emissions Database (GFED) Validating emissions factors for fires in different environmental and vegetation conditions in Africa.
Land-atmosphere activities in southern Africa • 2016-2017: • Land-cover feedbacks workshop (October 2016) • Africa special session at the iLEAPS conference in Oxford. • 2017/2018: • Carbon connections workshop (September 2018) • SAFNet workshop (April 2018) • Initiation of EFTEON • iLEAPS sponsored training workshop
Expanded Freshwater and Terrestrial Ecological Observation Network (EFTEON)
Expanded Freshwater and Terrestrial Ecological Observation Network (EFTEON)
iLEAPS sponsored workshop November 2018 • 50+ applications – many from other African countries • ~30 participants – half students, half people working at South African environmental agencies (SAEON, ARC). • We envisage this being the first of several training activities over the next few years – funding from EMS-Africa and DST. • Potentially iLEAPS can continue to engage in this process. • Possibly work towards some training activity at the iLEAPS conference?
The rest of Africa….. • Many nice talks at the iLEAPS conference from across the continent • Activities in East Africa to get better methane emissions from wildlife • West Africa landcover- meteorology feedbacks: • CEH knows more about that? • Nitrogen deposition?
Going forwards • Expand engagement in EFTEON and EMS-AFRICA and SASSCAL. • Plan some follow-through to keep the southern African connection going as I move off the SSC.
