I. The Book Facts • Photosynthetic protists that are covered by calcareous (Calcium Carbonate) plates called coccoliths. • Mostly found in the tropics, where they are important members of the phytoplankton. • When the cells die, their calcareous plates are deposited on the ocean bottom as sediment. • As a matter of fact, their shells do not decompose
II. Book Facts Cont… • The amount of the shells that drop on the seafloor allow studies of past decades. • The study includes how much content of coccoliths were around at that time and estimate the rate at which they accumulated. • When surface waters were warm and CO2 was plentiful with photosynthesis, the larger the population was, including their leftovers. • Visa Versa when cold and CO2 is low.
III. Species • Scyphosphaeraapsteinii • Case Lohmann 1902 • could be a valuable model to further study coccolithophore calcification and cell physiological responses to ocean acidification.
IV. Research Online • Classification: • Empire: Eukaryota • Kingdom: Chromista • Subkingdom: Hacrobia • Phylum: Haptophyta • Class: Coccolithophyceae [Prymnesiophyceae] • Subclass: Prymnesiophycidae • Order: Zygodiscales • Family: Pontosphaeraceae • Genus: Scyphosphaera
V. More Facts (online) • Usually get consumed by zooplankton. • The role that they play in the ocean is still unknown.
