DES 606 : Watershed Modeling with HEC-HMS Module 1 Theodore G. Cleveland, Ph.D., P.E 30 April 2012
Module 1: Organization • Course Organization • Expectations • How the course is structured • Resources • Training Binders • On-line resources specific to this course • References supplied on FlashDrive
Module 1: Expectations • Equivalent of NHI-HDS-2 (DES-808) • A prior college course in hydrology. • And/or two years experience in drainage analysis • And/or professional development course in SWMM, TR-20 or similar tools.
Module 1: Expectations • Participants should have ability to convert between US Customary and SI units. • Participant should have practical computer skills typical of practicing engineers. • The course assumes minimal familiarity with HMS, however you should be able to get the program started on your own. • How-to download for your “personal” computer is included in the training videos.
Module 1: Course Structure • Day 1 • Overview of HEC-HMS • Hydrology review as appropriate. • Hands-on use of most components by following examples and exercises in a workshop environment. • Some regard to parameter values, but mostly get the feel for different parts of the program.
Module 1: Course Structure • Day 2 • Parameterize HEC-HMS models • Hydrology review as appropriate. • Effort on proper parameter estimation for modeling. • Using calibration algorithms
Module 1: Course Structure • Day 3 • Added realism in HEC-HMS models • Hydrology review as appropriate. • Modeling change in a watershed • Course Assessment (Examination)
Module 1: Modules • Course presented in Modules • Lecture • Examples • Exercises
Module 1: Modules • Lecture • Presented as PPT slides. • Copies in course binder. • Electronic copies in the course Flash Drive
Module 1: Modules • Examples • Examples are stored as PPT but intent is to do each example live with participants. • The example PPT files skip many steps that are covered in the live participation. • Participation is vital in the examples, the instructor will go slowly so each participant can build their own “examples” and not simply import files.
Module 1: Modules • Exercises • Simple exercises at the end of many modules to reinforce the learning principles. • Assessment • Last module is a formal graded assessment.
Module 1: Resources • Software Required • HEC-HMS installed and running. • TSD can install on your work computer. • MS Office Suite (or similar Open Office suite). • Assumed already installed on your work computer.
Module 1: Resources • Printed Materials • Course Manual • Lecture copies • Reference excerpts (where appropriate) • Exercises
Module 1: Resources • Digital Materials • Electronic copies of the course manual • Excel files used during the course • HEC-HMS files used in examples • Training Videos • Complete copies of various references • Hundreds of pages, print as needed when you start using the software at work.
Module 1: Resources • On-line materials • Course Website
Module 1: Example • At this point in subsequent modules would direct participants to a different set of files and begin a workshop-type mode. • In Module 1 the examples are: • Start and Stop HEC-HMS (proof-of-install) • Start and Stop of MS Excel • Tour of Flash Drive contents
Module 1: Summary • Introduction to the course • Overview of resources available • Example 1 Workshop to Verify: • HEC-HMS installed and running on training computers • Adobe Acrobat Pro installed and running on training computers • MS Excel installed and running on training computers • USB Drives assessable from training computers
