The ancient Egyptians believed that the god, Khnum, created people out of clay on a potter’s wheel. • Sobek was a god of the Nile. Live crocodiles were kept in pools at the temple to honor Sobek. • Ra was the god of the sun. The ancient Egyptians believed that Ra was swallowed by the goddess of the sky, Nut. Then, every morning, he is reborn. • Thoth was the god of knowledge. The Egyptians believed that Thoth invented hieroglyph writing. • Khepri was the god of creation, rebirth, and the movement of the sun. The goddesses(Lowercase g) • Nut, a goddess, is the goddess of the sky. The ancient Egyptians believed that her body was like a canopy over the Earth. • Isis was a protection goddess. She was married to the god Osiris (god of the dead). • Hathor was a goddess of protection, love, and joy. She was sometimes said to be the mother of the pharaoh. • Sekhmet was the goddess of war. She looked like a woman with the head of a lioness. • Nephthys was a protective goddess of the dead. Ancient Egyptian Mythology Fun Facts • The ancient Egyptians were polytheistic (people who believed in many gods and goddesses). • They had several myths about the creation of the world. • These ancient people also had no Holy Book (ex. The Holy Bible). • They believed that to have eternal life, you had to preserve the body and mummify them. • Another fact is that the dead had to travel through the underworld, a wretched place.
More Ancient Egyptian Mythology Fun Facts The pyramids the ancient Egyptians built were believed to be a vehicle to heaven, or eternal life. The pharaoh believed he became a god in the afterlife. The gods and goddesses were also believed to have the same emotions and feelings as human beings. The crowns that were worn by the gods all had different meanings. The temples that were built were believed to be the dwelling of the gods and goddesses. Only the top notch people like the priests and the pharaoh were allowed in the temples.
