balanced force – when two forces are acting on opposite sides of an object and the object does not change its position
unbalanced force –when a force acts upon an object causing it to move
inertia- an object’s tendency to keep doing what it is doing (either moving in a straight line or not moving at all)
rest – the state of an object when it is not changing position in relation to its surroundings
motion – an object’s changing position in relation to its surroundings
The distance you and your bicycle continue to travel after you apply the brakes is affected by two things: Mass and Force • No matter how fast something moves, it is harder to stop a larger mass than a smaller one
The stronger the force applied to the brakes, the shorter the distance the bicycle will move before stopping. This is because you are applying a stronger force to act against the force of the moving bike. • If you petal very fast, you apply a strong forward force to the bike. Your bike will travel a long distance if you try to stop it.
