HELLENIC ASSOCIATION OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY AND TRAUMATOLOGY Athens Academy Award 2004  HAOST was founded in 1947  HAOST has an Executive Council of 9 members Holds its Annual Meeting at mid-October Counts 910 active members and 830 associate members, mainly residents, not all in good standing  Not all the orthopaedic surgeons and residents are obliged to be members of the Association

  6.  Greece divided in 13 Peripheries  Greece divided in 11 Health Authority DistrictsThe largest is Attica and the second one is Central Macedonia

  7. Greece has 7 Medical Schools:1. Athens (Attica), 2. Thessaloniki (Central Macedonia), 3. Ioannina (Epirus), 4. Larissa (Thessaly), 5. Patras (Peloponnisos), 6. Alexandroupolis (Thrace), 7. Heraklion (Crete)

  8. Every year about 900 Medical Students admitted to the Schools

  9. There are 80 Public HospitalsThere are 11 University Orthopaedic Dpts. and 104 Public Orthopaedic Dpts.

  10. There are also Private Hospitals but they do not have the right to train Residents

  15. Orthopaedic Residency Program in Greece 6 yrs Training Program1 yr General Surgery 5 yrs Orthopaedics 1 yr Paediatric Orhtopaedic, 3 yrs Reconstructive and Trauma and 2 semesters either of Plastic,Thoracic, Vascular or Neurosurgery

  16.  There are not exams to start the program. There are not obligatory exams during the program. There are final exams to get the specialty

  17. In Greece the Educational and Training system, as far as is concerned, the Post Graduated Medical Training Program, is controlled by the Ministry of Health

  18. Recently the Health Authorities started thinking that the Residency Program has to be organized by the National Scientific Societies

  19. HAOST is a pioneer Society, as far as is concerned, Continues Medical Education Orthopaedic Program since 1984There is a permanent Committee and now it serves as an advisor to the Health Authorities

  20. The last two years HAOST published1. “Guidelines for the Prevention of Deep Venus Thrombosis in Orthopaedic Surgery” 2009 and 2. it is under press “Guidelines for the Use of Bone Grafts in Orthopaedic Surgery” These two publications distributed to the Greek Orthopaedic Community and Greek Physicians
