Land Grants • From 1823 to 1825 • Mexico passed laws offering new settlers land and low prices • In return colonist agreed to learn Spanish, become Mexican citizens, and convert to Catholicism
Growing Tension • By 1830 Americans in Texas far outnumbered Mexicans • The American colonist had not adopted Mexican ways • The United States had offered twice to buy Texas from Mexico • Mexico wouldn't allow anymore Americans to move to Texas • The Americans and Texas were upset and worried
The Battle of the Alamo *Leaders: Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, William B. Travis • Santa Anna didn’t want to lose San Antonio • The Texans were greatly outnumbered • 12 long days of attacks • A Mexican cannon broke through the walls and they raided the fort • Very few lived to tell the story
Texas Declares Its Independence • March 2, 1836: The Republic of Texas • The Texas Declaration • Stated that the government of Santa Anna violated the Mexican Constitution • Sam Houston: Chief of Texas forces • Goliad Massacre • Texans came face to face with Mexican troops • Several hundred Texans were executed under Santa Anna’s orders
Attempt at Reconciliation • Some Americans called for independence, others hoped to stay within Mexico. • In 1833, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became president of Texas.
Stephen F. Austin • Stephen F. Austin tried to remove the ban on American immigration to Texas, and to make Texas a separate state of Mexico. • Santa Anna agreed to the first request but refused to the second request. • Austin was arrested • Santa Anna became a dictator and made central control.
The Struggle for Independence • In 1835 The Mexican Revolution began. • Mexican troops tried to seize a cannon held by Texans. • Texas taunted the Mexicans A brief battle broke out The Texans called for volunteers • Many answered • Texans freed San Antonio from a large Mexican force. • Despite the victories, problems arouse. • Groups argued over who would take the lead.
The Battle of San Jacinto • Houston-900 soldiers • Santa Anna-1,300 soldiers • April 21, Texas launched a surprise attack • Killed 600 soldiers, and captured 700, including Santa Anna • On May 14, 1836, Santa Anna signed a treaty to give Texas its independence
The Lone Star Republic • September 1836 • Sam Houston-President • Mirabeau Lamar-Vice president • Houston sent a delegation to Washington D.C, asking to annex, or take control of, Texas • Andrew Jackson refused
The Road to Statehood • Texas experienced mounting debt • Southerners wanted to join the U.S. • Northerners didn’t want to be another slave state • Van Buren didn’t want slavery issue or start a war with Mexico • John Tyler became president of Texas in 1841 • James K Polk became president in 1845 • Texas joined the Union in 1845
