Basic principles • No direct registrations with the registry (EURid), only via registrars • List of accredited registrars (www.eurid.eu) • New registrars can join anytime • First-come-first-served • Exceptions: • Reserved lists (countries, EC) • Blocked list (names not allowed at 1st level) • 2 letter names representing cc • Phased registration (sunrise) • All other names are allowed; no proof needed after sunrise
Who can register a .eu name ? • An undertaking having its registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the Community, or • An organisation established within the Community without prejudice to the application of national lay or • A natural person resident within the Community
Phased registations • A period of 4 months during which only holders of a prior right can apply for a domain name • Phase I (two months) • Registered trademarks, Geographical indicators and designations of origin, Public Bodies • Phase II (two months) • Names that can be applied for during phase 1 • All other prior rights: trade names, company names, business identifiers, literary works etc
Phased registrations • Requested domain should correspond exactly with the name for which right is claimed (special rules for exceptions) • Registrant has to provide a proof • All applications will be validated by • Governmental validation points (for public bodies) • PricewaterhouseCoopers (for all other rights) • First-come-first-served principle also for applications during sunrise period
Cost of .eu name • Registration for one year 10 € • Renewal for one year 10 € • Sunrise applications • Handling costs 15 € • Validation costs • 20 € (public bodies) • 30 € (trademarks) • 70 € (other)
Alternative dispute resolution • During sunrise • An applicant can start ADR when he does not agree with the decision by Validation Agent and EURid • After sunrise • An applicant can start an ADR against domain name holder who has registered a name on which the complainant has a prior right
