Worried about a resident’s online chatter? • Example of Megan Meier (bullying & MySpace) • Is the person saying things like “I just want to end it all” or “I can’t take it anymore” or “I wish I had never been born?” Have other residents reported concern about this person’s chatter? • Help the person by • telling them that you are worried about them. Be direct. • Use listening skills (reflect feelings, paraphrase, don’t judge). • Show support, be available, be interested. • Ask them If they are thinking of killing themselves. • If they say yes, ask the other questions (do they have a plan, do they have the means, do they have hope, have they ever tried to kill themselves before –and if so, how) • Get their number, find out if anyone else is near who can help. Encourage them to reach out to someone who is near. • Contract with them that they will not do anything without talking with you first. • Make a plan • If the threat is imminent • Call 911 or security • Go to their room to check on them. • If they aren’t in their room, • Follow up. Suggest an appointment with the counseling center. Call to check on them.
