Ideas Behind Surrealism • Purpose • Expose truth by stripping objects of their normal significance • Free people from “false rationality”, and restrictive customs and structures
Emphasize • Images that go beyond formal organization • Imaginative parts of the “unconscious mind” • The “sur-real”, or “more than real” state can be something we see, feel and experience, yet is difficult to comprehend.
Inspiration = dream interpretation • Do you think that these examples resemble dreams?

Surreal Still Life Painting Steps • Draw 2 composition ideas • Finalize 1 idea. Pick the composition idea that you like better and add more detail to it. (include background, all objects, color choices, etc.) • Talk with Mrs. Vue or Ms. John • Tape down paper to cardboard • Paint a wash (1 light color) over the entire paper • Draw the outlines, or contour lines, of your objects • Paint a base color for objects, highlights, & shadows • Add details and more color
