  3. Biography (cont’d) • 1619- published translation of Thucydides’ “History of the Peloponnesian War” • Developed great interest in math and science • He liked the logic • Wrote 3 books • De Condore • De Homine • De Cive

  4. Beliefs in Government • Hobbes believed in Absolute Monarchy • Only one that can guarantee peace • Believes that conflict leads to civil war • Advocated that all members submit to one absolute central authority

  5. Beliefs in Government (cont’d) • Hobbes System- gov’t belief that obedience to Sovereign is tied to peace in all realms • Hobbes’s belief of Sovereign • Empowered to run gov’t • Determine all laws • In charge of church • Determine 1st principles • Adjudicate in philosophical disputes

  6. Philosophical Ideas • He thought that humans had good intentions • But will be inherently bad no matter what they really do • Believed that people should self-govern, but should have a head that makes laws for peoples’ benefit
