Ancient India Asoka’s Leadership Chandragupta’s grandson, Asoka, further expanded the Maurya Empire through warfare. After a bloody battle against Kalinga, Asoka renounced violence and converted to Buddhism. He issued writings that supported the Buddha’s message and sent missionaries into other parts of Asia to spread Buddhism. Under the Guptas, Indian scholars, writers, and scientists did advanced work. Mathematicians invented the decimal point and the number system that we use today.
