Biography • Its believed that Bosch was born in 1450 in what is now the Netherlands, and lived till 1516. • His paintings are known for the concentration on Medieval Symbols. • Bosch’s life is known very little of even his training • His birth name was Jheronimus van Aken • Nothingwas known about his personality or his ideas for the meaning of his art • It is assumed that either his father or his uncle trained him how to paint since most of his family were artists
The Ship of Fools • Was painted in 1490-1500 in Musse du Louvre, Paris • It is painted with oil on wood • This is a image of mankind voyaging on a ship in the sea and each person is representing a fool and how they live their lives
Haywain • Haywain was painted from 1500-1502in Madrid, Spain • The painting is a triptych that is painted with oil • This shows the journey from Eden to Hell and details the sins of humans
The Conjuror • Made in 1475-1505 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France • Painted with oil on wood • This describes how the conjuror is distracting the people with his hand while his assistant steals an onlookers purse which shows suffering and inhuman
The Last Judgment • This triptych was made after 1482 in Vienna, Austria • This was made with oil on wood • In this part of the triptych Jesus is judging the souls for their sins while he is surrounded by the Saints
Garden of Earthly Delights Cont. • This is one of Bosch’s most famous triptych that was created in 1503-1504 in Madrid that was painted with oil on oak • This shows the Garden of Eden • It shows a creation of life
Why is Bosch important to the Renaissance? How is Bosch unique? • Bosch is important to the Renaissance because he did a lot of religious paintings and had a lot of symbolism in them • He was unique on how he explored the human character and did triptych’s plus he only signed 7 of his paintings • They also were about sins and punishments
