What is a Habitat? • A habitat is the area where a plant or animal naturally grows and lives. • There are many different types of habitats found in Georgia. • Let’s learn about some… Did you know that organism is another name for living thing?   6. Georgia’s Habitats • Georgia provides a home for many animals and plants. • The habitats found across the state are: Table of Contents

  7. Georgia’s Mountains Rugged mountains, ridges, and rivers are found in the Appalachian, Blue Ridge, and Ridge and Valley regions of Georgia. Table of Contents

  8. Mountain Animals Common Snapping Turtle Red Squirrel Black Bear Hawk These are animals that can be found in the mountains of Georgia.

  9. Mountain Plants Ferns Rhododendron Yellow Birch Beautiful plants are found in the mountain regions of Georgia.

  10. Piedmont • Rolling hills and pine-hardwood forests are found throughout the Piedmont region of Georgia. • Atlanta is in this region! Did you know that Piedmont means foot of the mountain? Table of Contents

  13. Marshes/Swamps • Freshwater marshes and swamps are found in the Coastal Plains of Georgia. • Tall trees, bogs, rivers, and ponds are home to many animals in this region. • The Okefenokee Swamp, the largest swamp in the U.S., is located in Georgia. Okefenokee Swamp Table of Contents

  15. Marsh/Swamp Plants Sassafras Pitcher Plant Bald Cypress Pitcher Plants are insect-eating plants commonly known as fly-traps.

  16. Georgia’s Coast • Wide, wet, beaches with hard-packed sand are on Georgia’s Coast. • The Barrier Islands serve as a habitat for animals along the Coastal Plains. • They protect the beaches by blocking wind, sand, and water that may wear down the mainland. Table of Contents

  19. Atlantic Ocean • The Atlantic Ocean is the large body of water that borders Georgia. • It provides a home for many organisms. The Atlantic Ocean is the 2nd largest Ocean in the world. Table of Contents

  20. Animals of the Atlantic Ocean The Atlantic Ocean is full of animals of all sizes. Invertebrates, fish, mammals, and reptiles live in the ocean. Mollusks, crustaceans, and sea anemones are all invertebrates. Fish spend their entire life in the ocean.  They take oxygen in through their gills. Bottle Nose Dolphin Loggerhead Turtle Crab

  21. Atlantic Ocean Plants Atlantic Ocean plants are located near the surface where sunlight can reach them, because they need sunlight for energy. They combine sunlight with nutrients from the ocean water to make food. Plankton Seaweed
