  1. Drill, Tap, Die & Eye

  2. Fastening Metal • Drilling • Tap • Die • Eye

  3. Drilling • Drilling Procedure • Layout the center of the hole to be drilled • Mark the center with two intersecting lines • Center punch the intersecting lines

  4. Drilling • Select the correct drill size from a drill index • Put the drill into the drill chuck and tighten with the chuck key.

  5. Drilling • Clamp material to the table • Place a drop of cutting fluid on the center punch mark • Turn on drill and begin to drill hole • Be sure to put even pressure on the drill

  6. Tap and Die • There are 2 ways to cut threads: • External Threads (bolt) • Die-cutting threads on the outside of a piece of rod • Internal Threads (nut) • Tap-cutting threads on the inside of a hole

  7. Tapping Procedure • Layout hole location using “Drilling” procedure • Select required tap size and threads per inch (TPI) • Consult Tap Drill chart for hole size

  8. Threads inside and out • 3 classifications of threads • National Fine (UNF) • National Course (UNC) • National Pipe Thread (NPT)

  9. Thread Diameter • Diameter of the thread measured directly over the threads • Thread Pitch- # of threads per inch

  10. Threading Tools • Tap • Tap handle • Die • Die Stock

  11. Threading tools cont. • Cutting Fluid

  12. Bending and Eye Eye bolts 1. Cut one piece of 1/2” round stock 9” long. You will be using a 7/8” die to make your loop. Note: 7/8” X 3.14 = approximately __3”_________.

  13. 2. Using the 7/8” die bend a closed loop Flip the loop and straighten eye bolt. (be sure to adjust pins when needed)

  14. Finish Closing the Eye in the Vice

  15. 4. Taper the straight ends of the eye bolt on the bench grinder.

  16. 5. Mark 2” down from the straight end.

  17. 6. Using the ½” die and die stock holder cut threads in you eye bolt until they reach the 2” mark. (Be sure to use plenty of oil)

  18. 7. Clean oil off of eye bolt using a paper towel and clean threads on wire wheel.

  19. Making the Nut • Cut a piece of 1” X 1” ( ¼” long) • Locate the center and mark with soap stone • Center punch the center mark • Secure square stock in vice on drill press • Put a 27/64” bit in drill chuck • Drill hole using plenty of oil

  20. Taping the Nut • Secure nut in vice • Using ½” tap NC 13 slowing turn clockwise while applying pressure. • Be sure to use plenty of oil.
