Eva Hesse- Life • “I remember that I have always worked with contradictions and opposing forms, because they correspond with my idea of life. The entire absurdity of life. For me, life was always full of contradictions.” • Died at the age of 34 from a brain tumor • Was born in Germany just before Nazi’s took power. She and her parents were able to emigrate to the US, but all her remaining family members were killed at various concentration camps • Her mother committed suicide when Eva was 10
Eva Hesse- Experience and Art • Studied in New York explored Minimal Art and Pop Art • Early works included self-portraits, gouaches, and collages • Later did more painting and drawing of abstract expressionism • Became more of a sculptor, but many of her pieces are considered to hover between painting and sculpting • Thought that by creating a series with small variations, she could encourage the observer to consider the absurdity of infinite repetition
