THE RELATION BETWEEN A PLANT CELL AND THE NHL (National Hockey League) By: Colin McNelis 8th block NHCELL (PLANT)
NUCLEUS • Spherical body containing many organelles, including the nucleolus. The nucleus controls many of the functions of the cell and contains DNA. • In comparison Gary Bettman is the “Nucleus” of the NHL because he controls all actions that go on in the NHL just like the Nucleus to a cell.
VACUOLE • Alarge, membrane-bound space within a plant cell that is filled with fluid. Most plant cells have a single vacuole that takes up much of the cell. It helps maintain the shape of the cell. • An NHL regulated rink is the equivalent to a vacuole in a way of how it holds all the players and the fans. It also has a regulated shape which relates to how the vacuole shapes a cell.
RIBOSOME • Small organelles composed of RNA-rich cytoplasmic granules that are sites of protein synthesis. • Players of the NHL are like Ribosomes because they are the smallest unit/ranking of the NHL they are also if you think about it little proteins which make the NHL bigger and stronger with the more players the league has, as does a cell.
CELL WALL • Athick, rigid membrane that surrounds a plant cell. This layer of cellulose fiber gives the cell most of its support and structure. The cell wall also bonds with other cell walls to form the structure of the plant. • The boards to an ice rink are like a cell wall because they surround the players to keep them safe and form the shape of a hockey rink.
CHLOROPLAST • An elongated or disc-shaped organelle containing chlorophyll. Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts. • A hockey puck is relatively close to chloroplast because you need a puck to score goals and get revenue for the league which is photosynthesis for the NHL to create revenue (energy).
PHOTOSYNTHESIS • Aprocess in which plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food energy, oxygen and water. Chlorophyll or closely-related pigments are essential to the photosynthetic process. • NHL games are related to photosynthesis due to how they convert all the time spent practicing and coaching and converting it to wins to get them higher in the league ranks.
