  1. The Flipped Math Classroom Marie Knox Western Technology Center mknox@westtech.edu

  2. Videos • Intro: Origins of Algebra (from kahnacademy.org) • Salman Kahn Talk at TED 2011 (from ted.com)

  3. Traditional Math Classroom • Teacher is the center of attention • Lecture today • Homework due tomorrow

  4. Flipped Math Classroom TRADITIONAL DEFINITION • Lecture via videos at home • Homework done in class with teacher available

  5. Flipped Math Classroom IT IS NOT … • Synonym for online videos • About replacing teachers with videos • An online course • Students working without structure • Students working in isolation The Daily Riff July 2011

  6. Flipped Math Classroom IT IS … • A way to increase interaction. • An environment where students take responsibility for their own learning. • A classroom where the teacher is a “guide on the side”. The Daily Riff July 2011

  7. Flipped Math Classroom IT IS … • A place where students who are absent don’t get left behind. • A class where ALL students are engaged in learning. • A class where ALL students get a personalized education. The Daily Riff July 2011

  8. … not all material is suitable to be taught through a video lesson The Daily Riff June 2011

  9. Why Did I FLIP? • When I first began students struggled and learned little. • I had poor Algebra II results on the first pilot EOI. I did not cover all of the content. • IN SEARCH OF CHANGE …

  10. I found Coolmath.com • Amazing website to help students, as well as teachers. • LOVED the teacher success area, and totally clicked with the ideas of Karen, the creator. • Implemented Survivor Algebra, and adapted it to my style of teaching.

  11. Results • After changing our approach, >92% Algebra II and Geometry students at WTC have passed the EOI for the last four school years!!! • WTC is now known as the place where students “learn” mathematics!!!

  12. My Current Implementation … Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus • Online Pearson MathXL For School • Assign “classwork” • Students teach material to themselves • Variety of resources available • Peer instruction encouraged • Detailed lecture during review for chapter test

  13. Sample Lesson Intro to Trig

  14. Video • Broken Escalator (from YouTube)

  15. Video • Yaymath.orgFounded by Robert Ahdoot • Positive, Lively, Free, Confidence boosting way to teach Math. • Movement that empowers students to success

  16. Video • Algebra II – Intro to Trigonometry (from Yaymath.org)

  17. Flipped Classroom Benefits • ALL students are engaged • Concept based vs. time based • Learn a topic “completely” before moving on creates greater depth of knowledge • Concepts are hard wired • Learning without “Limits”

  18. Thank YOU!!
