  1. Energy Efficient HVAC Design for Cold Storage Michael Huang, LEED AP Energy Engineer UC Davis

  2. What’s an Ultra Low Freezer? • Ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers reach -86oF • 400,000 units nationwide, 650-1000 at UCD

  3. Why do we care about them? • Very low cost to store priceless samples

  4. If Your Freezer is Operating Efficiently... • Samples are safer • Energy is saved

  5. Conventional Cooling Approach • Size plug load in kW, convert to kBtu/hr, convert to tons, then purchase AC unit (or CHW HX) to cool space X Q = 1.08 × m × ∆T heat load 1.08

  6. Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle Arrangement

  7. UCD Primate Center BARD units ~50 ULT Freezers of various size/capacity No economizer Wall mounted BARD units

  8. Heat Gradient Across Room

  9. Engineering Model

  10. UCD Primate Center

  11. Cold Aisle

  12. Hot Aisle

  13. Estimated Savings Based off economizer savings & EER rating

  14. Conclusion • Hot aisle/cold aisle containment • Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance!
