  1. Adolescent Growth and Development EQ: What is the process of puberty?

  2. What Makes Puberty Happen? The pituitary gland sends a signal to the body to produce the hormone that starts puberty.

  3. When does this Happen? An average female tends to go through puberty usually two years sooner than an average male; but, there is a great difference between individuals. • Puberty happens between 8-15 years old • Everyone will start and finish at a different time • This is normal

  4. Does everyone produce the same hormone? If you have testicles, the pituitary gland sends a signal to produce Testosterone. Testosterone is a steroid hormone that stimulates development of male secondary sexual characteristics, produced mainly in the testes, but also in the ovaries and adrenal cortex.

  5. Does everyone produce the same hormone? If you have ovaries, the pituitary gland sends a signal to produce Estrogen. Estrogen are hormones that are important for sexual and reproductive development, mainly in women. They are also referred to as female sex hormones.

  6. Puberty Changes Both male and female Increase activity of sweat and oilglands (acne) Increase in body hair (chest, facial, armpit) Growth of pubic hair Body has growth spurt Beginning of sexual desire

  7. Puberty Changes Male Widening of shoulders and chest (V-shaped) Enlargement of the voice box (lower voice) Enlargement of the penis and testes Increase in facial hair Longer and larger bones (tall)

  10. Muscles push the semen (which contains sperm) into the urethra and out of the penis. Shows that the male reproductive system is working Carries sperm How a male can impregnate a female What is an ejaculation?

  11. Sometimes called a “wet dream” “Nocturnal” means at night, and “Emission” means discharge No need to be embarrassed, they can’t be controlled Male stores a six week supply of sperm Nocturnal emission occurs to release decomposing sperm cells to make room for new ones Nocturnal Emission

  15. Menstruation The female period Shows that the female reproductive system is working Monthly flow of blood (the lining of the uterus and the decomposing egg is being washed out of the body (Video)
