Odyssey Standalone vs. ILLiad/Odyssey What is the difference? Tony Melvyn OCLC
OSU experiences dramatic increase in online lending using Odyssey In October 2006, 61% of filled article requests at OSU were delivered via Odyssey, compared to 36% filled via Odyssey in October 2005. What a difference a year makes! We've reduced the number of articles we send in paper to a trickle, and our ARIEL use has dropped significantly as many libraries now turn to Odyssey. In Ohio, many schools that had never sent articles electronically in the past are now using the free Odyssey Standalone client. We are pleased and amazed at how many other locations are increasingly using Odyssey within ILLiad or the free Odyssey Standalone software.“ Ohio State University Interlibrary Services (OSU)Brian D. Miller, Lending / Document Delivery Service Coordinator

Who should use Odyssey? • Smaller libraries that want to offer their patrons electronic documents over the web or via email • Libraries within a consortia that borrow and lend heavily with each other for articles and where ILLiad use is pre-dominant • Libraries that may want to reduce costs by moving to Free Odyssey vs For Fee Ariel
Why use ILLiad/Odyssey • Any library that wants to incorporate all ILL functions within a single interface including E-doc delivery. • Any library that wants to eliminate loads of paper processing and handling. • Move away from reliance on Ariel and move to a growing group of Odyssey users.
Odyssey has revolutionized our Interlibrary Loan department. Two years ago, our article turnaround time was a terrible 11 days and our loan turnaround time was 14. Today, our article turnaround time is anywhere between 2 hours and 2 days. Once we were comfortable using Odyssey for Interlibrary loan lending and borrowing, we spread our wings to Local Document Delivery. In other words, we use Odyssey to supply copies of in house articles to our patrons desktop. The faculty, students, and staff of Akron's campus LOVE us.
