  2. It was one of the children. He was crying…I could see the child. It was the blind boy, his hands up in front of him, pushing against the darkness. Then I saw a figure-it was Jonesy- running toward him…Where’s Jonesy? He’s Hit! Pg. 270 & 271 This is irony because Jonesy goes to save a child who is shot and he ends up getting shot. The theme is that war is deadly and you can die at any given time. Even with armor and a helmet you can die; doing heroic things.

  3. Okay, so we all had the 411 and so here comes Major Sessions into our squad meeting looking like she just stepped out of a fashion magazine and talking about how good a job we’ve done. Pg. 167 & 168 This is a metaphor because it says she looked like she came from a magazine. The meaning to the tone is that they had just got information about their destination then the Major enters all dramatically.

  4. The explosion that had rocked the Humvee. The sudded bursts of gunfire. Marines leaping out of their vehicles ready to fight. The body of the dead Marine. Pg. 133 This is irony because while the C.A are trying to help the iraqi citizens they try to kill them. This fits with the mood in this part of the book because everyone is happy and normal then they are instantly mad and focused.

  5. It was almost like getting ready for a baseball game, reassuring ourselves that we were cool, that we were going to win. Pg. 25 This is a metaphor by saying when they are going into battle its just like going into a game. This is important to the theme because it shows that the C.A are not scared of terrorists.

  6. My heart jumped and I heard Marla send a burst of machine gun fire toward the guys with the RPGs. Pg. 101 This is personification because his heart didn’t really jump. Also this is important to the theme because if they died from the RPGs they wouldn’t have won all the different towns trust ; because they are the C.A.

  7. Her anguished eyes pleaded hopelessly. I walked away. Away from the house, away from the body, away from the grandmother. Pg. 57 This is personification because it said her eyes pleaded, this shows she was sad and wanted something in return for her dead grandson. This is a good moral to the theme because it demonstrates how sad, inhumane, and horrific war can be.

  8. The vehicle, lying on its side, was just a dark sell, like a huge prehistoric animal with flames licking at its blackened ribs. Pg. 134 This is a metaphor saying after the IED exploded the Humvee was blown up and demolished in fire. This helps show that in the book and the world, terror is everywhere waiting to make a name for its self.

  9. The foul smell of the Euphrates River mixed with the sweet odors rising from the sands along its banks, adding texture to the rising sun, like a chorus of strings backing up a sad saxophone. Pg. 233 This quote is a metaphor for how all the smells in Iraq mix and are bad. Saying it is like a sad saxophone.

  10. The guys in the mess hall came up with a dynamite cake and enough ice cream to feed the entire army. Pg. 234 This is a hyperbole because the men didn’t really make enough ice cream to feed the entire army. This is necessary because in the army there are times to be serious and to be fun like this time when it is someone’s birthday.
