ARGOSTOLI is the capital, a welcoming town that shows all signs of British planning. It is the centre of communication and offers a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. Very little remains from the old city which was destroyed by the earthquake in 1953. All houses were destroyed except in the northern town of Fiskardo, the only one which survived this earthquake of 7.2 in the Richter Scale.
There are also some wonderful beach resorts like Poros, Skala, Makris Gialos, Antisami, Lepeda and Platis. You may choose among a great range of options which include ones of golden, grey, red and white sand or with large of small pebbles and with a shelving sea or strong sea currents.
Amazing things to look at in Cephallonia... • Lake Melissani • Drogarati (stalactites) • Mount Aenos (1628m)
Every 15th August, in celebration of the Virgin Mary, it is said that snakes are found in this small church in Markopoulo village. These snakes with little crosses on their heads only come out on this day. There’s also a flower which is dead all year round, but which blooms on that day. It’s called “Our Lady’s Lily”.
