  2. Contractions • A contraction is one word that is made by putting together two separate words and shortening them. • She’ll is short for she will. Part of the word will is missing. The letters w and i are missing and an apostrophe takes its place.

  3. Contractions • There are about 70 contractions in the English language. • Most contractions are made by leaving out two letters like the word she will (she’ll). • Some contractions are missing only one letter.

  4. Contractions • didn’t I’m • Did not are the two words that make up didn’t. The apostrophe replaces the o, which is in the middle of the word. • I am are the two words that make up I’m. The apostrophe replaces the a, which is at the beginning of the word.

  5. Contractions • let’s we’re • Let us are the two words that make up let’s. The apostrophe replaces the u, which is at the beginning of the word. • We are are the two words that make up we’re. The apostrophe replaces the a, which is at the beginning of the word.
