  2. Buckle Up America • National Campaign to increase seat belt use • National Goals: Increase national seat belt use to 85% by 2000 and 90% by 2005 • Reduce child occupant fatalities (0-4 years) by 15% in 2000 and by 25% in 2005 (from a total of 685 in 1995) 85% by 2002

  4. Why Buckle Up? • The most effective means of reducing fatalities and serious injuries (saving an estimated 9,500 lives in each year) • Reduces the risk of fatal injury to front seat passengers by 45% (light trucks – 60%) and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50% (light trucks 65%)

  5. Why Buckle Up? • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of work-related death (23%) • On-the-job crashes cost employers almost $22,000 per crash and $110,000 per injury • Traffic crashes on- and off-the-job cost business $55 billion in 1994
