How to Play Pelmanism The TA Follow-Up Session
Word Pelmanism in IGR • Pelmanism (or matching pairs) is a good way of ensuring that new words are overlearned • In general, overlearning allows for further consolidation and memorisation of that which has been introduced • Word Pelmanism focuses on the sixth linguistic level in the learning cycle (overlearning at the level of the word) • In IGR, Word Pelmanism is played during the TA Follow-Up Session. It is the penultimate step in the IGR Learning Cycle
Pelmanism Words are Story-Specific • Each IGR Learning Pack includes a game of story-specific Word Pelmanism • This consists of 9 pairs of matching words from the (previously-read) story in the pack • Some of these pairs of words are printed in Blue (simple decodable words), and some in Red (sight or more complex words)
Blue and Red words in Pelmanism • Words in Pelmanism are printed in either blue or red to make it easier to help children who may be unsure how best to tackle words they can’t remember • They learn when playing Pelmanism that ‘if it’s Blue you can sound it through; if it’s Red just say it instead’
Laying out the word cards • Begin by laying out the (well-shuffled) word cards upsidedown in a patterned or regular way • Players take it in turns to turn over 2 cards and read the upturned words aloud • If they are a matching pair the player has ‘won’ them and is given one second turn (NBthere is no second turn if a second pair is won – this keeps play moving along)
Remembering card placement • When players are reading and have read their 2 upturned cards, they must leave them in position as they turn them upsidedown again • This makes it possible for other players to remember card placement • Be sure to deal yourself in so that you can engineer children’s pair-winning asnecessary
Ending the game • The game ends when all the pairs of word cards have been won • Please ensure that every child succeeds in winning at least one pair • If time allows, do a very quick sight-reading check to help consolidate children’s short-term retention of this set of words
