Division of Research Infrastructure The IDeA Program Designed to enhance the competitiveness for research funding of institutions located in states with historically low aggregate success rates for grant applications to NIH.
Division of Research Infrastructure Funding Mechanisms within IDeA • Biomedical Research Infrastructure Networks (BRIN). $1.5 M direct costs per year for 3 years to support research infrastructure and networks of institutions (24 awards; one per state). • Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). $1.5 M direct costs per year for 5 years to support thematic, multidisciplinary research center (48 awards; not more than 1 submission per eligible institution). ND eligible for 2 more.
Division of Research Infrastructure Research Centers in Minority Institutions Programs Several funding mechanisms, all requiring: • > 50% minority enrollment, • PhD or MD awarding, • performing competitive biomedical or behavioral research.
NIH Minority Programs outside of NCRR • National Institute of General Medical Sciences http://www.NIGMS.nih.gov Minority Access to Research Careers program: Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research, faculty fellowships for predoctoral studies, senior or visiting fellows, training activities. • National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities http://NCMHD.nih.gov EXPORT programs for workshops in community outreach and training in biomedical research.
Division of Research InfrastructureFacilities Improvement Programs Research Facilities (C06) • for new construction or major renovations of buildings housing PHS-supported research or training; • awarded competitively on the basis of scientific merit, engineering plan, and institutional needs; • up to $4 M total costs (no indirect); • 1:1 matching requirement (waiver for exceptional cases); • Federal government maintains 20-year interest.
Division of Research InfrastructureFacilities Improvement Programs Animal Facilities (G20) • to improve laboratory animal facilities; • awarded competitively on the basis of scientific merit, engineering plan, and institutional needs; • up to $700 K total, including up to $200 K for major equipment essential to the facility; • may be used to meet AAALAC standards; • may be used for specialized containment facilities.
Division of Biomedical TechnologyInstrumentation Programs Shared Instrumentation Grant Program • provides support to acquire instrumentation costing $100-500 K. High-End Instrumentation Grant Program • provides support to acquire instrumentation costing $750 K- $2 M. Instruments must support research of three or more NIH-funded investigators; institution must pay for service contracts and infrastructure.
Division of Biomedical TechnologyIntegrated Instrumentation Core Facilities Program • funds for instrumentation costing >$75 K per piece, up to $ 1M total award; • in support of biomedical research requiring state-of-the-art technologies and expertise; • expected to be conducted at large, complex, multidisciplinary centers.
Division of Clinical ResearchScience Education Partnership Award • funds for partnerships between academic institutions, science centers and museums to improve life science literacy and convey the excitement of conducting biomedical research; • up to $300K/year for up to 5 years; • focus is at K-12 level.
Division of Comparative MedicineInvestigator-initiated Research Projects • support research to establish or improve an animal model of a human disease, especially if not within any other NIH category; • can be R01 type, including preliminary data to strengthen application; • can be R21 type, exploring a new direction.
Support for Undergraduate Institutions outside of NCRR • R01 (with preliminary data) or R21 (pilot project) from any institute or center in the field of research relevant to your project.
Support for Graduate Students outside of NCRR • National Institute of General Medical Sciences: http://www.NIGMS.nih.gov National Research Service Awards • fellowships and training grants in bioinformatics, biotechnology, cell biology, genetics, pharmacology, systems and integrative biology, others.
